What to Pray When Sorrow is Just a Breath Away

Someone once told me, “Some of the happiest people I know are those who have lost much.” This conversation came on the heels of losing my mother, one of many devastating occurrences in my life.

I navigate my days with happiness, humor, and a healthy dose of sarcasm. But often, sorrow is just a breath away.

When my world is still and silent, the sadness creeps in. I allow myself to dive in for a short time, but I refuse to be swallowed up for fear that I will never resurface from the ocean of grief.

As I reflected on this conundrum, I began to journal and pray when this prayer emerged. This prayer is always nearby as the rhythm and magnitude of the waves are unpredictable.

Prayer takes the power from the trials at hand and places them at the foot of the throne. Scripture is referenced throughout, focusing on God’s truth, character, and promises.

I encourage you to begin journaling and writing a prayer of your own. But if you find yourself speechless, unsure of how to begin - borrow these words for a while until God writes His on your heart.

You are loved. You are cherished. You are adored. May you never know a day without Jesus.
